It's a #cleanbeautyspotlight week! We are excited to introduce our next vendor, Melissa, Founder of Herb Market Botanicals. Melissa is a holistic nutritionist and wellness advocate. She's committed to using only 100% natural, effective, superior-quality ingredients with formulas to help promote nourishment for the body, mind, and soul.
What values do you have that you believe you carried into your brand and company?
Honesty, quality, and compassion are important values to me that have definitely been carried into Herb Market. When it comes to our brand, being completely transparent with our ingredients is key, as we want to build trust with our customers.
Quality is also a significant value to me. For our formulas, we select premium ingredients, in their most natural state, and choose organic whenever possible. We never cut corners, especially when it comes to the ingredients in the food we eat or the products we put on our skin.
Compassion for our planet and our animal friends has always been very important to me. As an eco-conscious brand, the choices we make regarding our sourcing and packaging, always has the planet in mind. We’re also proudly vegan and certified cruelty-free.
What inspired Herb Market Botanicals?
I’ve always been passionate about natural health and plant-based living, so studying holistic nutrition allowed me to pursue this passion professionally. However, it wasn’t until a close family member’s diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer that triggered a switch in focus towards skincare. I felt deeply inspired and determined to create a completely toxin-free skincare line, while channeling my studies of holistic health into the skin.
The name was inspired by the healing modalities of herbs and plants. When I think of the word market, I think about community, and I think of fresh, local, and natural ingredients. ‘Herb Market' to me, conveys a place where you can find many different botanicals to help aid, restore, and create something, naturally, and this is exactly what I intended for the line.
What’s your favorite part of creating your products?
My favourite part of creating products is definitely the formulation process. Being in my studio, working with a wide variety of botanical extracts and essences, truly feeds my passion for plants and natural living. The freedom to be able to get creative and experiment with these ingredients is so enjoyable for me.
What has been your most exciting moment with Herb Market Botanicals so far?
There hasn’t been one specific moment, but rather looking back, and seeing our growth is so rewarding. It’s exciting to see what a difference just one year can make. I think when you’re growing a business from scratch with few initial resources, you’re faced with many different challenges. Everything becomes a learning experience which contributes to real growth.
What was your biggest hurdle in creating your skin care line?
One of our biggest challenges was sourcing our packaging. As an eco-conscious brand, we needed to include sustainable materials, for both our products and shipping supplies. This was definitely one of our biggest hurdles as we wanted to maintain a luxury feel without compromising on quality and sustainability. It wasn’t easy as the majority of packaging out there includes synthetic fabrics and plastic derived selections.
What advice would you give people interested in starting their own skincare or beauty business?
The time to start is now and focus on one thing at a time. With starting a skincare business, the whole picture can feel quite overwhelming, but it really helps to focus on one task at a time. You don’t need to wait until you have enough funds for custom packaging or a team of marketing experts behind you. If the passion is there, let it fuel and guide you. You will learn and adapt along the way. Our brand is still a work in progress, as we’re always working to improve, but I think the main message here is to just start.
What is your favorite beauty ritual that leaves you looking and feeling naturally beautiful?
My favourite beauty ritual consists of taking the time to slow down and intentionally care for my body and mind. I love drawing a warming salt-water bath, diffusing calming essential oils, and setting the scene by lighting a few natural candles. While the tub is filling up, I like to take the time to dry brush my body, and sometimes apply a face mask. When soaking in the tub, I try to practice mental stillness, as I believe a bath is the perfect time to really rest the mind. I find water to be very healing and therapeutic. It makes a difference when you take the time to do everything with intention, rather than a rushed routine. This is my go-to beauty ritual when I’m feeling overwhelmed and stressed. It really helps rejuvenate my skin, body, and mind.
What’s coming up next for Herb Market Botanicals?
We have a few products in the works, which is always exciting. In time, we also plan to release a special ‘infused’ collection, which I’m very excited about.
For now, we’ll be releasing some gift sets, just in time for the holidays.
We’re featuring Herb Market Botanicals Ultra Hydrate Organic Body Butter in the Winter box. What prompted the creation of this product?
From a young age, I loved finding raw shea butter in the nutshell at my local health store. I knew when I was formulating the body butter, I wanted it to resemble the rawness and purity of this. While studying holistic nutrition, I learned about the many healing aspects of certain botanical oils for skin, so I knew I wanted to include these beneficial ingredients. The goal was to create a body butter so pure and raw, full of active nutrients to really feed and heal the skin, from the inside out - for all skin types.
