Welcome to our #cleanbeautyspotlight featuring Sean, Founder of Kilig Candle Co. Kilig Candle Co. creates all natural candles that include 100% soy wax, packaged in beautiful recyclable glass jars. It began with Sean's undying love for candles and how they can evoke a memory, set a mood, or transport you to a place you've never been to before.
What values do you have that you believe you carried into your brand and company?
In my everyday life, I do my best to be a conscious consumer and find eco-friendly alternatives for the things that I love. When creating and envisioning my candles, I wanted to create just that. I’m so happy to say that all Kilig Candle Co. candles are made from 100% soy wax which is clean burning for your home, we use lead-free cotton wicks, non-toxic and phalate-free fragrance oils and essential oils, and recyclable glass jars.
What inspired Kilig Candle?
Candles have always been a staple for me anywhere that I’ve lived and one day I started to do research on the candles I was using. When I realized that a lot of the big box stores were using paraffin wax (this wax contains carcinogens and they are released into your home when burning) and wicks that contained lead in them, I was sad that I was burning these candles in my home while trying to live a healthy lifestyle. I did some more research as I was on the hunt to find candles for my home that weren’t going to cause any harm to my health and decided to try making them.
After sharing them with family and friends and having all of their positive feedback, I decided to try selling my candles and started a little Instagram account. I’m so grateful that my business has grown and my candles are appreciated by so many other people now.
Kilig means “Butterflies in one’s stomach” in Tagalog, why did you choose this name for your company?
The word “Kilig” has always been my favourite word in Tagalog. It’s so cute and I think everyone has definitely felt “kilig” before!
What’s your favorite part of creating your products and scents?
I think my favourite part would be creating the names for the candles and mixing scents to find something interesting and new. When creating the names of the candles, I also find it as a new way for me to learn more about my Filipino culture and heritage!
The scent making process is also a lot of fun, I love experimenting with different oils to create new scents that I wouldn’t normally think of.
What has been your most exciting moment with Kilig Candle so far?
I think just watching this business grow has been a very exciting experience. I never thought it would have even grown to the size it is now! Being able to create something that people genuinely enjoy is such a fulfilling feeling in itself.
What advice would you give people interested in starting their own business?
Just do it! Starting anything new is a scary process and at times you may think you’re not good enough or that your ideas aren’t going to be well received, but it’s all a learning experience. As cheesy as it sounds, if you believe in yourself you can really do anything.
What is your favorite beauty ritual that leaves you looking and feeling naturally beautiful?
At least once a week I make it a priority to have a nice relaxing bath. It’s a time where I can pamper myself with a bathbomb or maybe a facemask. I make sure I’m listening to my favourite podcast and can just sit back and enjoy some “me time”. I think the most important thing about feeling and looking “naturally beautiful” is taking care of yourself from the inside out and bath definitely leaves me feeling relaxed, balanced, and up for the next task.
What’s coming up next for Kilig Candle?
This September we are releasing 3 new scents to our collection along with our brand new Mood Mists! These three new candle scents are a little bit different to what we’ve done in the past and are perfect for the cold months ahead. I’m also really excited about our new Mood Mists as they’re non-alcohol based and are made with 100% essential oils! They’re great for on the go and can be sprayed onto yourself, linens, or into the air.
We’re featuring Kilig Candle’s Gunita Candle in the Fall box. What prompted the creation of this product?
Gunita was such a fun candle to make! I love sweet scents but wanted to create something that was fresh with a bit of kick. The honey and fig blend perfectly together to give that fresh scent from the fig and the sweetness from the honey. I thought ginger would be a great addition to the candle as that perfect little kick to the fragrance notes. It’s a wonderful candle and doesn’t have a heavy scent when burning.
