Welcome to our first #cleanbeautyspotlight of the Spring Box! We are so excited to dive into this season's founders. Kicking off the series we speak with Peggy, Founder of Lily Organic. Peggy founded her company in 2015 and has been working to make natural, organic skincare available to everyone since!
What values do you have that you believe you carried into your brand and company?
I wanted to make a skincare line that was available for every budget out there. Even with our ingredient list, we have been able to create a line that is more affordable than our competitors in the natural and organic space. We've proudly been able to keep our prices the same since 2015!
What inspired Lily Organic?
My daughter was born in 2006 with eczema and was asthmatic as well. As time went on it became worse. Around the same time, my husband was also suffering from a skin rash and sensitivity. If it wasn’t bad enough my asthma was affecting the family and me. So we took the initiative to switch to natural and organic products over the shelf, thinking this would solve all of our problems. I’ll be honest, it helped a little, however, with time the effects wore off and the product wasn’t working for us. The cost wasn’t worth it either.
So in 2010, I decided to educate myself further by taking courses regarding the use of natural and organic ingredients. How they affect one’s body, mood, soul and of course skin. Over five years of working with organic ingredients, I started seeing amazing results with skincare and overall health. I learned that when you feed the skin, it’s like feeding and nourishing one's body. Feeding your body fresh, healthy, and simple food is not a one-time thing. It is something we should continually do. When we do this for ourselves, it helps us to sleep better and have more energy throughout the day. Hey, we all have a cheat day, but if we do it more often we notice a change in our body chemistry and it’s not always for the best. The same goes for our skincare regimen too.
The name was suggested by my sister because we had a huge garden of white lilies in the house we grew up there and we both love the garden to death!
What’s your favorite part of creating your products?
The challenge I have to go through to find the effective ingredients, the ingredients’ effect on each other when combined, finding suitable packaging, and making all of the work as price friendly as possible!
What has been your most exciting moment with Lily Organic so far?
Running a business can be like a punch to the stomach every single day, however, there are some days every entrepreneur experiences where they feel over the moon. For me one of those days was the day I received Health Canada Approval for Sunscreen SPF30. I was crying and laughing at the same time, the never ending process was totally worth it.
Also, the most exciting days for me are when we donate part of our income. It feels like I’m supporting my community and am part of them.
What was your biggest hurdle in creating your self care line?
The public always assumes that pricey products work better! The hardest part is to convince consumers to try our products, and so far 95% are hooked to our whole line!
What advice would you give people interested in starting their own skincare or beauty business?
You have to be dedicated. Be willing to work nonstop, willing to miss big days in your kids' lives and work. You can invest a couple years into the business without taking an income, and you're willing to educate yourself and avoid those second thoughts. You're willing to learn from your mistakes several times, and if you're okay to knock on doors and never hear back, you're ready to run your dream business!
What is your favorite beauty ritual that leaves you looking and feeling naturally beautiful?
Washing my face morning & night, applying toner and sunscreen in the morning and serum at night. Simple, fresh, healthy & effective!
What’s coming up next for Lily Organic?
It’s a surprise for now!
We’re featuring Lily Organic’s Organic Hair Oil Treatment in the Spring box. What prompted the creation of this product?
Each product on our line can do more than just one thing, depending on how you apply it. For me, it feels like a waste to buy different products to see the best results, so I always do my best to create a product that can do much more for my customers without breaking their bank account!
As a creator and product designer, we are responsible for every penny our customer spends in our store, so we have to be mindful and build trust, not just sell products!
I created the hair oil because I’ve had oily skin and scalp and for ages, and like many other people with oily skin, I was scared to get close to oils. For years I made my scalp and skin as dry as possible and of course the result was absolutely awful!
After I learned more about oils, that almost all of our skincare are made of different oils and butters, and what their effect is on skin and scalp, I added hair oil to our line. We actually need to help our skin & scalp produce oils which help to balance oil production for healthy hair. When we try to minimize or maximize the oil production, the result is exactly the opposite.
