Welcome! Meet Jess, Founder of Native Nectar Botanicals. Their core mission is to elevate your mood, create confidence in your own skin, and connect you to the power of all natural ingredients. Their products bring beauty and healing properties of nature into everyday self-care rituals. In this #behindthebrand learn about Jess' most exciting moment so far, and her advice for all you entrepreneurs wanting to start your own company.
What values do you have that you believe you carried into your brand and company?
Connection is really important to me, connection to people and to nature. I’ve really tried to carry that value into my business. I love connecting with my customers whether that’s answering questions or helping them tailor a routine for their skincare concerns. And of course my ultimate guide and inspiration is my connection to the natural world around me.
What inspired Native Nectar Botanicals?
I launched Native Nectar shortly after I had my first child. I was in the process of becoming a Clinical Herbalist when I found out I was pregnant (surprise!). This sudden life change left me feeling really lost. All of my plans, life purpose and even how I viewed myself shifted in a short amount of time. I wanted to continue working with herbs and natural medicine but I didn’t know how to balance that with having a newborn. When a friend commissioned me to create some herbal tinctures for his clients I felt like maybe this is something I could do, just on the side to keep working with the plants I loved. Around the same time I began talking with another friend about creating a natural skincare line. We ended up doing our own thing but through this process I started dreaming about really making something of these ideas, not just as a hobby. NNB growing to what it is now has been a slow and sometimes difficult process but I’m so thankful that this little business has given me so much purpose and fulfillment.
What’s your favorite part of creating your products?
I love the formulating and design process. The initial spark of an idea can come from anywhere, sometimes it’s a single ingredient I want to work with or sometimes I feel inspired by the packaging design first and then I figure out the right kind of product to fit that design. I do all of my own design work at this point and I love having that artistic outlet.
What has been your most exciting moment with Native Nectar Botanicals so far?
I’ve had lots of exciting moments but currently I’m really excited about being chosen to be a part of Tory Burch’s Holiday Seed Box. The box contains products from female entrepreneurs and the profits benefit the Tory Burch Foundation. She’s such an amazing role model for women in business and it felt really surreal to be recognized by her company. I also have a few other super exciting opportunities that I’m hoping will come to fruition in the new year but I have to keep those under wraps!
What was your biggest hurdle in creating your own skincare line?
I think the biggest hurdle has been getting out of my own way. It’s really easy to get trapped in comparing myself and business to others and feeling like it’s not enough. Whenever I get in that head space I try to do something creative that I feel good about to snap out of it and appreciate what I have to offer. Sometimes it’s big like a new product and sometimes it’s as simple as updating my website.
What advice do you give to people wanting to start their own business?
I know it’s kind of cliche but my advice is to start before you’re ready. Take the leap and figure out all the little details on the way. It’s easy to feel like everything’s been done already but no one else has your perspective and specific talents so find a unique way to bring your gifts to the world.
What is your favorite beauty ritual that leaves you looking and feeling naturally beautiful?
Lately my favorite beauty ritual is facial massage with a Gua Sha stone. I keep one on my nightstand and use it before I bed. I can feel tension releasing in my face and neck and I also love the way it brings an instant glow to my complexion.
We’re featuring Native Nectar Botanicals’ Resurface Liquid Exfoliant in the Winter box, what prompted the creation of this product?
I create a lot of my products based on what my own skin needs. It’s a bit selfish but I figure if I’m dealing with certain skin issues, others are too. Living at a very high altitude in the mountains, dry skin and damage from environmental stress are conditions I'm very familiar with. I wanted to create a product that would have exfoliating properties but gentle enough to use frequently. I think most of us enjoy the feeling of exfoliating and the idea that we’re getting rid of the old and bringing fresh skin to the surface. But for so long we’ve been taught to use these really harsh abrasives (looking at you Apricot Scrub!) that actually damage and age the skin. Using natural acids found in fruit renews the skin without the damage. I get customers telling me all the time that the Resurface changed their skin overnight and I love hearing that!
