Welcome to our last #cleanbeautyspotlight of our Winter Box! In today's interview, we chat with Nicole, Founder of Salt & Seaweed Apothecary. Read on to hear Nicole's story of how Salt & Seaweed Apothecary came to be, and her passionate commitment to the environment.
What values do you have that you believe you carried into your brand and company?
Salt & Seaweed Apothecary is passionately committed to protecting the environment through the creation of luxury, small-batch bathing rituals created with sustainable, responsibly harvested raw ingredients from the wild and pristine oceans of British Columbia, Canada.
Handcrafted and proudly un-commercial, my products are made from ethically and sustainably sourced ingredients, supporting local, natural and organic Canadian growers, manufacturers and distributors.
They're toxin-free, preservative-free, cruelty-free, and beautifully preserved in glass containers. Zero parabens, synthetics, sulfates, petroleum, GMO's, animal by-products, artificial colors or fragrances that would dilute the nutrient-rich, skin-loving benefits of the plant-based ingredients used.
What inspired Salt & Seaweed?
As a holistic Aesthetician, clinical Aromatherapist and a Naturopath, I was perpetually researching healthier skincare options that I could recommend with honesty and certainty to my clients, products that were safe and effective, and would complement their healing journey, untainted by toxic synthetic ingredients.
The harsh reality I discovered, was that many brands contained ingredients that were inferior and questionable, many even unpronounceable, with an abundance of low-quality fillers along with synthetic colorants, fragrances, and scary preservatives. Reading labels shouldn't require a PhD. I felt compelled to be "the change I wanted to see in the world". I knew I had the knowledge, the expertise, and never settled for anything other than excellence in my ingredient choices.
I've created toxin-free products for my loved ones for many years, and found myself sharing them daily with my clients, who were thankful for natural and effective solutions. In early 2012, I launched my first skincare company as a Certified Advanced Soap & Cosmetic formulator, and in the summer of 2017, our family relocated to Vancouver Island, BC. At that time, I decided to change the direction of my company. My passion for the ocean and it’s incredible restorative healing powers became my new obsession and my focus.
What’s your favorite part of creating your products?
The whole process from formulation to packaging is exhilarating, knowing that I’m creating not only an exceptional, plant based product that guarantees formulations are active, effective and pure, but the unique, opulent ingredients ensure the creation of spectacular product quality and functionality, with beautiful results, considerably raising the bar in luxurious, holistic skincare. Add a little sparkle with gorgeous custom-designed packaging, and I’m in love with the entire process!
What has been your most exciting moment with Salt & Seaweed so far?
Building connections, relationships & friendships with my customers, and forging extraordinary partnerships with store & spa owners across the country.
What advice do you give to people wanting to start their own business?
The number one thing for me is, “do what you’re passionate about,'' if you love what you do, you’ll have the drive & passion to succeed. Create a plan of where you want to see yourself and your business - 1/3/5 years from now and set actionable goals towards that. Decide & commit to a savings plan that will keep your business in the black
