Clean Beauty Spotlight: The Rose Company

by Jessika Noda |

It's our LAST #cleanbeautyspotlight feature of our Winter 2020 Box - can you believe it?! Time just flies by. Today we're learning all about The Rose Company founded by sister-duo Mady and Becka.

What values do you have that you believe you carried into your brand and company?

We believe in good quality products that last and create minimal waste - this is the way we consume goods, from clothing to the products we use at home. For The Rose Company, we believe that products made with all natural, whole ingredients are best and work the most effectively.

What inspired The Rose Company?

The company is named after our late mother Rose, who passed away 5 years ago from cancer. She was an advocate for all natural, organic products and always encouraged us to read the labels so we knew what was going onto/into our bodies. We looked at the products we use on a daily basis and realized how much plastic waste we were creating. We started the company because we saw a gap in the market for clean beauty products with eco-friendly packaging.

We love your focus on sustainability reflected in your packaging. How did you come up with the design of a push up vs twist lip balm?

This type of paper tube packaging is not new to the market, but at the time we were developing our custom tubes, we mainly saw deodorants in larger formats. The “push up” format also means you get more of the product, vs the twist up which has a plastic tube in the middle. Following up on sustainability, we wanted to ensure that the entire tube would fully decompose so we omitted any laminate coating that you commonly find on paper products.

What’s your favorite part of creating your products?

We always have a lot of ideas for new products and being able to bounce ideas off each other is a lot of fun. We formulate all of our recipes ourselves, so we like to get a bit messy in the kitchen coming up with new things.

What has been your most exciting moment with The Rose Company so far?

When we received our first shipment of our custom packaging that we designed ourselves, we hugged and jumped up and down – It was so exciting to see our vision come to life! It is always nerve wracking bringing a new product to market, but seeing how much people love the products has been very rewarding.

What was your biggest hurdle in creating your self care line?

We are currently hand pouring all of our products in small batches. We have been looking at ways to scale the business, which may mean finding a manufacturer to help with production. It has been challenging finding a company that aligns with our sustainability and clean ingredient values, and who is willing to work with our custom packaging. Also, because we designed our packaging to be a custom size, every tool or accessory for manufacturing also needs to be custom made.

What advice would you give people interested in starting their own skincare or beauty business?

The advice I have for anyone looking to start any business (not necessarily skincare or beauty), is if you have something to offer, just go for it. You can figure out the “how” afterwards, the hardest part is always getting started. Find a mentor and don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions.

What is your favorite beauty ritual that leaves you looking and feeling naturally beautiful?

After discovering the benefits of organic rose water and making our own (made fresh with roses from our garden), I love spraying the rose toner on after washing and before moisturizing my face. The toner relieves any sensitivities or redness and works to keep my face hydrated. It is also great if you need a refreshing pick me up mid-afternoon.

What’s coming up next for The Rose Company?

Launching a business right before a global pandemic was really strange! We’re proud of what we’ve accomplished so far but we have big plans for the coming year! We are looking forward to diversifying our product range and hopefully we will be able to attend markets and pop ups in order to meet our community face to face.

We’re featuring The Rose Company’s Vanilla Cocoa Lip Balm in the Winter box. What prompted the creation of this product?

The Vanilla Cocoa lip balm was one of the first products we thought up. Cocoa butter has such amazing nourishing benefits for the skin, and the vanilla scent compliments it nicely - perfect for the dry winter months!
