We're back with another #cleanbeautyspotlight! In today's feature, we learn from Founder, Elysse on her skincare and business journey starting Wabi-Sabi Botanicals from her studio apartment and $300.
What values do you have that you believe you carried into your brand and company?
I value authenticity, and kindness, and creativity, all of which I feel are reflected in Wabi-Sabi Botanicals and what we stand for. Authenticity is a big one for me - I’ve always wanted our customers to feel like they can truly be themselves, feel beautiful in their real, imperfect skin, and know that we’re not selling “perfect” or “flawless” - just your real, healthy, radiant skin.
What inspired Wabi-Sabi Botanicals? (how/why you started the brand, also the story behind the name!)
My own journey with chronic (severe!) acne and sensitive skin inspired me to create Wabi-Sabi Botanicals. I was really drawn to “clean”, natural skincare, but almost everything was filled with essential oils and was often just as harsh or not acne-friendly as the conventional products I was trying to get away from! I wanted natural, beautiful, luxurious skincare that was truly sensitive skin and acne friendly.
I knew Wabi-Sabi as a Japanese term that means finding beauty in imperfection - it fit perfectly with what I wanted to create and where I was at in my own personal journey, learning how to feel confident and beautiful and enough even with my imperfect, acne-prone skin.
What’s your favorite part of creating your products?
I’ve always been a creative, always creating something, and creating these products is my art! I love combining science, and nature, and good ‘ol divine inspiration to create something beautiful inside and out. People can really feel the love that goes into creating the products.
What has been your most exciting moment with Wabi-Sabi Botanicals so far?
There have been so many! When Urban Outfitters became my first retailer six months into “launching” my brand on Etsy. When Beauty Heroes featured Wabi-Sabi Botanicals in their holiday Discovery. When we got into Credo and Blemish Correct became a Best Seller there (still is!) I started with $300 in my studio apartment and it’s been exciting ever since.
What was your biggest hurdle in creating your skin care line?
Working with a very small budget and having zero business experience whatsoever! But now I wouldn’t have had it any other way.
What advice would you give people interested in starting their own skincare or beauty business?
I would say we don’t need another jojoba and sunflower oil facial oil! There are thousands and thousands of brands out there. Only do it if you have something to add.
What is your favorite beauty ritual that leaves you looking and feeling naturally beautiful?
Hiking in the redwood forest - best beauty ritual there is!
What’s coming up next for Wabi-Sabi Botanicals?
We are growing fast. I’m excited to introduce our first water-based serum in 2021 - I created it with our (all female run!) lab this year during all of the chaos and it and the name is just perfect. Eventually I’d like to create an SPF, but only if we can nail it and it’s not like every other clean SPF already on the market!
We’re featuring Wabi-Sabi Botanicals Ultra Moisture Boost Serum in the Winter box. What prompted the creation of this product?
My skin tends to be drier in the winter / colder months and I know I’m not alone in this, so I knew we needed a beautiful, essential oil free, sensitive skin-friendly solution to dry skin, flakiness, peeling. And Moisture Boost was born!
