Ingredient Spotlight: Japanese Seaweed

by Jessika Noda |

With cooler weather approaching, you may be searching for a skincare product that will help with dry, dull, and irritated skin. Enter: Laminaria Japonica, or Japanese Seaweed. It’s an algae-rich ingredient that duplicates the aesthetics of mammalian collagen by delivering enhanced levels of moisture to the skin.

As a little background, our skin naturally produces collagen which is known to keep our skin from sagging, giving us that plump, youthful look. However, as we age, our body starts to decrease production.

When we look at collagen in skincare products, they are typically sourced from animal byproducts like bones and skin, which is why Japanese seaweed is a great alternative for vegan, cruelty-free, and conscious consumers.

Another reason why seaweed is so great in skincare is its ability to hold and retain water. It’s an amazing source of hyaluronic acid which holds and retains moisture in the skin. If you think about the seaweed in your miso soup, the dried seaweed really expands and absorbs the liquid it’s sitting in. In skincare, seaweed will also hold moisture inside our outer layer of skin which adds to the plump, brightened skin look.

Japanese seaweed is also known for its anti-aging and antioxidant properties. Research has shown that kelp extract has shown antioxidant effects that work to neutralize free radicals from the environment. When incorporated into skincare formulas, kelp extract’s antioxidant protection helps to reduce oxidative stress found in the skin, which can also aid with anti-aging effects.

One of our favorite products with Japanese seaweed is MIFA & Co’s Vitamin Sea Essence. Their vegan collagen essence provides a powerful, weightless boost of vitamins and minerals for plump, deeply nourished skin. Vitamin Sea Essence combines a lightweight feel, with the high-performing ingredients of an essence.
