Turmeric, an ingredient most often found in South Asian cooking has been used for centuries for its health and skin benefits and is just starting to gain popularity in skin care in the West.
Turmeric is in the same family as ginger of the Zingiberaceae family. In food, it’s an excellent source of iron, manganese, vitamin B6, and potassium. It also dramatically increases the antioxidant capacity of the body.
Traditionally, people have ingested turmeric for its health benefits to treat issues like arthritis and ingestion, as well as to boost energy. Today, people are using turmeric topically to treat symptoms of inflammation on the skin.
What makes turmeric such a powerful ingredient? It contains a compound called curcumin which has both anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties leading to many skin and health benefits. A study in 2007 found that curcumin helps in skin regeneration in several aspects like boosting collagen production, reducing psoriasis & eczema, and even speeding up the healing process of wounds.
Because curcumin naturally reduces melanin production in the skin, it’s a great ingredient for fading dark spots & acne scars, brightening under eye circles, and evening out skin tone.
