Look Alive: How to Prevent Dark Circles

Despite our diverse backgrounds, at some point in our lives, we experience dark circles. Though fatigue is a top contender for dark circles, it is important to also note that age, genetics, and darker overall complexions also contribute to discolouration in the under eyes. Nonetheless, no one should have to deal with dark circles without having any options to reduce them! Here are some of our most effective ways you can look more alive:

Be More Cognizant Of Your Bad Habits:
As we age, the skin around our eyes gets thinner and loses fat and collagen (the structural protein that keeps your skin looking plump and prevents sagging) which makes our dark circles look more prevalent. Some bad habits (if not dealt with), such as rubbing your eyes, excessive sun exposure, and lack of sleep will actually only aggravate your under eyes even more.

Covering up your dark circles with makeup is a given, but there are ways to optimize your appearance with makeup.
Using a brightening concealer: Using a concealer 1-2 shades lighter than your foundation colour will highlight the under eyes much more than a shade that matches your entire face.
Concealers with actives: There are concealers on the market that include antioxidants such as hyaluronic acid and vitamins to help treat your skin for long-term benefits at the same time!

Tea Bags:
Tea bags aren’t only a relaxing drink, but they also can help improve the stimulation around your eyes! Since most teas contain caffeine and natural tannins (a class of astringents that reduce puffiness), applying cold tea bags over your eyes can reduce the appearance of dark and puffy under eyes by increasing blood circulation and reducing water retention.

To do this, find a black or green tea (or any tea containing caffeine) and steep them for a 2-5 minutes. Next, place them into the refrigerator for about half an hour until chilled. After they are no longer hot, take each tea bag out and drain excess water over a sink then place over closed eyes for 10-30 minutes. Once you remove them, rinse off with cold water.

Medical Treatments:
There are also medical treatments available that can provide a more drastic and instant solution to your under eyes. Some of which include chemical peels to reduce hyperpigmentation, tissue fillers to permanently conceal blood vessels, and laser surgery. Please take note that any medical treatment should be consulted with your doctor prior to the treatment as some are painful and require a long recover time.
