CBD Clean Beauty Lifestyle indie beauty skincare routine skincare tips

How to Incorporate CBD Into Your Clean Beauty Skincare Routine

Having a clean beauty skincare routine in place ensures our skin gets the right ingredients to keep it looking glowing and healthy. So - why not try adding CBD to your skincare routine? An increasing number of indie beauty brands have started offering skin care products that take advantage of the magic (and science) of CBD.  If you’re seeking an alternative form of clean beauty, with a proven range of benefits, CBD might be your new best friend to add to your skincare routine.   What is CBD? CBD stands for cannabidiol and is one of many types of cannabinoids, a naturally occurring compound found in marijuana and hemp plants. CBD has been used to treat a ton of health care concerns, including skin issues like eczema and psoriasis. What makes CBD so attractive for skincare junkies is its anti-inflammatory benefits for all skin types. It also aids the skin through the repair of free-radical damage which often leads to collagen loss and quickens the aging process. CBD is first extracted from the seeds and stalk of hemp or marijuana plants and is then mixed with a carrier oil, such as coconut or hemp oil. It is this product that we see commonly marketed as CBD oil. Many small businesses geared towards affordable clean beauty have begun diversifying CBD as an ingredient through a range of products. This improves accessibility for those looking to add CBD to their skincare while offering products to fit every budget. This includes facial serums and creams, sprays, body butter - even lube. That loving feeling isn’t the only thing you’ll be hopped up on, anymore.   Does CBD Get You High? Despite the occasional marijuana pun, the reality is that CBD does not get you high. THC is another cannabinoid produced by marijuana and hemp plants, and is more commonly associated with the psychedelic effects experienced by marijuana users. However, the part of the plant from which CBD is extracted contains trace amounts of THC, meaning you won’t get high from using it. Or start tripping out at 11 pm when all you want to do is slather on your face cream and crawl into bed.   What to Look for When Purchasing CBD Skincare Before purchasing, it’s important to research the product's ingredients. CBD is generally formulated and sold in one of three ways:  As an Isolate – this removes all compounds, leaving only pure CBD. As full-spectrum – this contains a small number of cannabinoids and includes trace amounts of THC, usually less than 0.3 percent.  As broad-spectrum – this contains a small number of cannabinoids and includes no THC. Oftentimes, we will see a product marketed as containing CBD, when really it’s produced with cheaper alternatives. This practice is known as weed-washing and spells out the importance of researching ingredients to ensure you’re getting maximum benefits for your skin and purchasing clean beauty products from legitimate companies. The company should be clear on where their CBD is sourced from and their sustainability practices. It’s equally important that the company communicates the number of milligrams of CBD within the product and instructions for proper dosage. Lastly, ensure the product is in packaging that will not expose the ingredients to light or air, which may decrease its effectiveness.   Where to Buy CBD Skincare in Canada There are many great Canadian clean indie beauty brands putting in the time, research, and effort to produce high-quality CBD skincare products. Calyx Wellness produces a line of hemp-extracted CBD oils and lotions, while also educating newbies on the benefits, usage, and proper dosage of CBD. Calyx also does a great job of including the trace percentage of THC in their products. Delush carries CBD-infused body butter and body lotions. Their Magic Stick stands out as a good alternative for soothing aches and pains, and clearly states it contains both CBD Isolate and Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil. CBD skin care is an amazing option if you’re seeking clean ingredients with proven benefits for your skin and body, while supporting small businesses in a lesser-known sector of the cannabis industry.   Subscribe to this season's box to kickstart your self-care routine: Subscribe Now   Lindsay Stroud is a freelance content writer and ghostwriter from Vancouver, Canada.
