Face oils and serums have really exploded in the beauty industry lately. They can be used as both an alternative and a supplement to our cream moisturizers. Face oils are typically used for overall hydration and moisture of the skin, while serums are better suited for targeting specific skin concerns.
There are 2 main differences between oils and serums. The first is that face oils are made of oil-based ingredients while face serums are typically made with water-based ingredients.
The second difference is their molecule size. Oils have larger molecules so they can take longer to absorb into the skin. On the flipside, since serums are water-based, their molecules are smaller meaning they penetrate into the skin quicker.
Because of these differences, it impacts the order of how we use them as well. Since serums are lighter weight than cream moisturizers, it’s best to layer them under your moisturizer. Oils on the other hand are designed to retain the water in your skin so they’re best used on top of your moisturizer.
