Just as small businesses and startups are dealing with the impact of COVID-19, indie brands that rely on retailers are dealing with an uncertain future. We love supporting indie brands because it means supporting our communities and neighbors, passionate business owners, connecting, and building an engaged community together. As such, we wanted to highlight some indie brands and the amazing people behind them.
MIFA & Co
MIFA & Co was started in late 2017 by power duo Michelle and Fate, stemming from their passion for clean living and products made with integrity. Since then, they’ve brought on botanical chemists to use the best quality products in the best combinations. Their focus is products built with intention and integrity, with aromatherapeutic qualities. MIFA & Co extends beyond the (very high quality) product, to the experience and philosophy of craving nature, and therefore using nature to take care of ourselves. You can read more about this female-founded business here, or check them out at mifaandco.com.
We couldn’t highlight female founders without mentioning Reyna, founder of Kodo Collection. She started Kodo Collection to deliver affordable and high-quality products, tired of observing greenwashed beauty companies that weren't fulfilling the needs of consumers. She has 15 years of experience working with organic and natural ingredients, which she has formulated into a line of products good for the skin and soul. Kodo Collection focuses on ingredient transparency, highlighting both what is in their products and how those ingredients are sourced. You can read more about Reyna’s journey to founding Kodo Collection here, or through their website kodocollection.com.
Like Reyna, we at Jiyubox love the healing power of a soak in the tub, which is why we're so excited to bring on their Calm Beauty Water Toner.
This food-based skincare company began with an accountant, a food scientist, and a dream. Jeffrey and Kitty met in high school and had long aspired to start their own brand, combined their interests, and SCHMEARnaturals was born. Their innovative approach to skin care includes using food-grade ingredients in a variety of products; starting with face masks, SCHMEARnaturals has expanded to cleansers, toners, oils, and more. Inclusivity is one of their pillars, which is why they create quality skincare, regardless of gender, age, or skin type. You can read Jeffrey’s experience launching SCHMEARnaturals here, or on their website.

Tayler founded Midnight Paloma as a side project to her retail store. As Tayler began researching ingredients in beauty products, she was inspired by charcoal and her clean beauty company was born. Since then, Midnight Paloma has expanded to a slew of products that are cruelty-free and 100% organic. Tayler loves to have fun, and Midnight Paloma’s products are just that. Read more about Tayler and her brand here, or check out Midnight Paloma’s website.
It all began with one of our Midnight Paloma faves, the Charcoal + Rose Detox Mask (featured in the Fall Box). Try it in combination with either water, yogurt, or honey to match the needs of your skin.
Sonia (pictured above) & Fouad, Woodlot’s founders, started the brand in 2014 to fulfill the desire for natural, plant-based products. Their range of products is crafted from simple ingredients to inspire wellness and ignite conversations. The brand focuses on offering beauty and wellness goods that are intentional, inclusive, and natural. We here at Jiyubox are proud to offer their candles which are made with a mixture of coconut and soy wax, with pure essential oils. The jars are even reusable! You can learn more about Woodlot here.
While you’re at it, check out their Recharge Candle, with peppermint and rosemary, designed to uplift and de-stress.
The common thread between these indie brands and the hardworking, passionate founders behind them is the prioritization of wellness, ingredient education, and creating an offering that is good for you while providing the skincare benefits we seek. They all love their craft, from conceptualizing, developing, experimenting, failing and persevering to bring their family, friends, and customers the best quality product. We are so grateful for them and proud to represent equally passionate brands when it comes to ethical and clean beauty.
