In this week's vendor spotlight, we're highlighting MIFA and Co. Meet Fate and Michelle - relatively new to the Vancouver skincare industry, they've made a huge splash on the market and are known for their absolutely luxurious Eucalyptus Coco Body Washes.
What values do you have that you believe you carried into your brand and company?
Leading authentically and with purpose. Michelle and I LOVE meeting new people. This has been one of the driving factors of MIFA’s success. Connecting with our customer and being at events is something we genuinely enjoy and it gives us the purpose to continue doing what we do.
What’s your favorite part of creating your products?
OK so this is my favorite part of MIFA! I’ve always been a product junkie at heart and when we first started I loved creating and testing. Now we work with chemists in creating our products so it’s pretty amazing seeing our vision come to life and learning so much from them.
What inspired MIFA and Co?
Michelle and I are big advocates of the clean beauty industry and have always had a keen interest in ingredients and natural products – have it be in our food, skincare, or even our cleaning supplies. It’s hard to live a 100% natural lifestyle, that’s too crazy, but you can always start somewhere and that’s what we wanted to inspire people to do. To make that switch, even if its something as simple as your soap or body wash.
What was your biggest hurdle in creating your own skincare line?
Where do I even start with this question! I’m sure if you talk to different founders each person will tell you a different story on what their challenges are – just remember nothing worth it comes easy. Personally I’d say it’s the 1,000 moving pieces at all times.
Do you have any advice for someone who is thinking about starting their own skincare line?
Always look at the bigger picture and ask yourself – where do I want my company to be in 3 to 5 years and work backwards from there. If you don’t have the vision, then it’s easy to make decisions that aren’t inline with where you’re going.
When we were first looking for a manufacturer to make our soap, we had multiple people tell us to change our recipe to make it “cheaper”. I knew that MIFA was about creating high quality, luxurious products that perform. If we didn’t have a clear vision of what we wanted to create, then perhaps we would have made the wrong decision and changed our recipe.
What was the “Aha” moment when you decided to take making soaps in your kitchen to creating and actual skincare company?
I’d have Michelle to thank for that – what started out as a hobby in my kitchen became a business when Michelle said to me one day “hey you know I think we can sell your soap” – I laughed it off. She called me the next day to talk business – fast forward almost 2 years and here we are. I guess she wasn’t joking around!
