Let’s face it: The K-beauty multi-step skincare obsession is real. In today’s world of skincare and beauty, we are layering our products like no tomorrow. Have you ever stopped to wonder what order to put your skincare products on?
Using a product in the wrong step can lead to it being less effective because it won’t get absorbed into the skin properly - or even worse, irritated skin. Daytime vs nighttime skincare routines vary slightly, but in general they follow the same order with small tweaks at the end:
Step 1: Cleanser

Always, always cleanse your face in the morning and at night. Cleansing removes sweat and pore build up from sleeping overnight, and it removes makeup from the day. You can even do a double cleanse in the evening with an oil-based cleanser and follow with a cream or gel cleanser to really make sure you’ve removed all your makeup.
Step 2: Toner
Toners help to balance out the PH in our skin and are meant to hydrate and replenish dry skin. Essentially, toner is meant to prime your skin for the steps to come.
Step 3: Serum

If you’re not sure what the difference between a serum and a face oil is, check out our previous post. Serums are water-based and packed with concentrated nutrients. During the day you’ll want to use something like a Vitamin C serum that protects skin from free radicals. At night opt for something with hyaluronic acid which pulls water from the air into your skin while you sleep.
Step 4: Eye Cream
Since eye creams tend to be thinner than face moisturizers, you’ll want to apply them before the thicker creams and oil. An easy way to remember this is to apply your products from thinnest to thickest since thin products can’t penetrate skin after thick products.
Step 5: Treatments
In following suit of applying products from thinnest to thickest, apply treatments before your heavier moisturizer and oil so that the ingredients can sink into your skin.
Step 6: Moisturizer

Moisturizers are designed to add hydration to our skin as well as make sure all the previous products underneath stay put. Be sure to work around any spot treatments to avoid accidentally removing them.
Step 7: Face Oil

During the day, you’ll want to seal in all those nutrients with an oil. Since oils have larger molecules and take longer to absorb into the skin, you’ll want to put them on top of your moisturizer to retain the water and hydrating ingredients.
Step 8: Sunscreen (Day)
Last but not least, DON’T FORGET SUNSCREEN during the day. This is one of the most important steps to keeping skin healthy and un-damaged. It’s also the most common step to miss or forget. As we talked about in our Summer Must Haves post, sunscreen protects skin from UV rays that have the ability to do irreversible damage to our skin.
